New York Fashion Week & Tommy Hilfiger @ 30
It was game-time at Tommy Hilfiger as models Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn showcased an NFL-inspired AW15 collection on a makeshift football pitch!
Tommy Hilfiger is 30. Launched in 1985, the master of preppy Americana delivered a quintessentially Hilfiger collection to celebrate the brand’s birthday: Ali MacGraw meets the American college sports field. Models wandered around the vast astro-turfed stadium at the Armory on Park Avenue like beautiful extras from Love Story: centre parted of hair, and fresh of face.
Never one to shirk away from thematic commitment, the references were explicit: traditional college sweatshirts and basketball jackets were refashioned in faux fur; cardigans had whip-stitch details to suggest the craft of the baseball mitt; lace-up, wedge boots in tan and navy leather had an echo of a vintage bowling shoe, with white laces and a stripe running up the back seam. There was a gold platform Mary Jane (it seems the SS15 disco shoe by Saint Laurent has danced its way on to many a designer mood board this season), and an oversized “anniversary” clutch.
The athletic theme continued — leather dresses to look like sports tops, enamel charms to look like helmets — but I preferred the more Love Story looks: the long tailored shorts and wide-leg check tweed trousers that stopped short at the ankle bone, the raw, dark denim jackets with suede patch pockets, and the navy cape trimmed in caramel leather bands. As the line goes: “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Style means never apologising for trying to look like Ali MacGraw.
