Did you feel the slight tremble rippling through the cosmos this morning? Did you puzzle for an extra minute over which shirt to wear?
No, Mercury is not in retrograde. It’s just that New York Fashion Week is here. (Completists, in fact, will have already begun their fashion week rounds: a handful of shows, including the young-gun showcase VFiles, took place on Wednesday.)
IT’S KANYE’S WORLD...
The show of the day is, without question, Kanye West’s. Mr. West’s ambitions are arena-size, so he’s done the logical thing and booked an arena. A lucky few thousand will pack Madison Square Garden to see his latest Yeezy collection and hear the premiere of Mr. West’s new album “The Life of Pablo” (formerly “Waves,” formerly “Swish”). Expect throngs.
BUT WHAT COMES FIRST?
The action begins at 9 a.m. with Nicholas K, the brother-sister label from (Ms.) Nicholas and Christopher Kunz. From there, it’s on to the crowd-friendly va-va-voom of BCBG Max Azria.
Creatures of the Wind, the Chicago transplants with a taste for the outré, begin the afternoon at noon. You could make it an all-creatures afternoon with Creatures of Comfort, the downtown-chic line, which shows at 2 p.m., catch Rhié or the J. Crew and the Banana Republic alum Marissa Webb. But don’t miss Brother Vellies, the made-in-Africa accessories line by Aurora James. She scooped up one of three Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund awards in November. Expect lines.
PITY THOSE WHO FOLLOW MR. WEST
Talented designers, including the pop fantasist Adam Selman (who often works with Rihanna) and Mona Kowalska of A Détacher, show in his long shadow later in the afternoon. With any luck, Westapalooza will end in time for you to hit one or both. And if not — well, there’s always Assembly New York, wrapping up the day in Williamsburg at 8.
